by Ricardo Jiménez

International meeting about responsibilities, migration and integration in South America.

In Lima, Peru, on 15 and 16 August 2013, and as part of its activities, the networks of migration and the Southern Cone (except Brazil) held a international meeting about responsibilities, migration and integration in South America. Both networks are part of the Program on Ethics and responsibility and this time they had an ally in Andean Parliament, which includes the states of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia, plus Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela.

This was an unprecedented space where they met and talked horizontally, experts from civil society, state authorities and leaders of migrants. Among them, the Deputy Minister of Migration Ecuador, Andean Parliament, members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, and representatives of specialized networks in Brazil, among others.

The working meeting included a publicly international seminar. It also allowed generate a permanent network and discussion forum focusing on the responsibility for the impact on migration policies and regional integration.

One of the highlights was the need to make conscious the necessary responsibility of the various states and civil society to treat migration as a component of regional migration. Everyone is responsible, but in proportion to their abilities, power and resources.
