Course on Integration Set up in Chile for Schools with Immigrants

by Lucía Mariana Alvites

In Chile, the Ministry of Education has approved a mandatory course on South American integration for 12-year-old children in a school with a high immigrant pupil population …

After much effort, we are happy to inform that for the first time in the history of Chile, a mandatory course on South American integration has been instituted for 12-year-old children (7th basic) in a school with a high South American immigrant pupil population. The course will be taught from now on (March 2011), for this school year and all the coming ones.

This was the result of a commitment to work collectively and on a volunteer basis that began two years ago and went on until it was approved by the Ministry of Education of Chile. The course, general and mandatory, can be extended to any school in the country that wishes and requests to teach it.

It is a small step, but one that we consider encouraging in our struggle for the integration of peoples, the promotion of a cross-cultural society, the fight against discrimination, and understanding migrations as all peoples’ wealth.

The attached document (in Spanish only) is a brief description of the experience of this initiative.
